Storyline Of LIVING

The story of Williams, a veteran civil servant who has become a small cog in the bureaucracy of rebuilding post-WWII England, will unfold in London in 1952. The setting of the film will be London. He finds out he has a terminal illness as the never-ending pile of paperwork on his desk grows. His life may appear dull and meaningless, but he is determined to find some purpose for it before it passes him. During his first attempt to fully immerse himself in debauchery, which takes place during a wild night in Brighton with the company of a bohemian writer he befriends, he is only partially successful.

After that, upon returning to London, he completely disregards his obligations toward his family and his place of employment for an extended period. But very quickly, he finds himself fascinated by Margaret, a young co-worker in his office. Margaret exemplifies exactly what it means to live life to the fullest, something he may have missed out on up until this point. As their relationship deepens, she unwittingly demonstrates how to confront his impending death by channeling his many years of expertise and commitment into one final, all-out effort to see through the completion of a modest, long-delayed project that will benefit children living in a deprived area of East London. This is the effort that will enable him to overcome his own mortality.

The phenomenal direction of Oliver Hermanus, who chooses beautiful framing and perfectly timed editing with minimal camera movements, all of which are enhanced by the aspect ratio, is one of the film’s many standout qualities.
